Firefighter Daniel Kurtis Najera

March 25, 1986 - October 26, 2006

A year ago San Bernardino Forest Engine 57 was overtaken by the Esperanza Fire in the early morning of October 26th, 2006. All five members on the Engine Crew lost their lives, including our precious son Daniel (Danny) Kurtis Najera.

Not one day goes by without a remembrance of how much Danny will be missed and what it means to carry on his legacy. It is very difficult for us to speak let alone ‘go on’ in life as our hearts are still filled with grief. This week as we prepare to conquer yet another obstacle, we are feeling the emotion all over again, as we are surrounded by the glow of flames and billowing smoke filled skies. Our prayers go out that the fires will diminish and all the firefighters will go home safely.

Danny was so excited about what life had to offer, whether it was spending time with family, listening to music, playing with his younger brother and sister or skate boarding with friends. He always dreamed of becoming a firefighter and his enthusiasm led him on the path of helping others. In 2004 fresh out of high school Danny began his journey as a seasonal firefighter with the US Forestry Dept. He had a passion for helping out and building meaningful relationships. His kindness and determination helped him on his journey that touched so many lives. Danny’s friends speak of him as an individual with a huge heart, enjoying all kinds of music, they often mention that they miss his contagious laugh, and say that when they see pictures of him laughing, it can be heard in their memories. We thank all of you that have shared your beautiful stories of our son. We feel so blessed that he had such an impact in your lives and in your hearts… it was incredible to see the output of support from the community and Forestry family of their support that they gave. We know that this was felt across the Nation and the World, and we know that many people wanted to attend Danny’s service but were not able to be there. It is important to say that everyone, the support you have all given us this past year has been tremendous and invaluable.

The U.S. Forest Service family and the City of San Jacinto will miss Daniel, Mark Loutzenhiser, Jason McKay, Jess McLean and Pablo Cerda-The warriors who bravely fought the Esperanza Fire for the safety of the community. Danny will forever be in our hearts and memories. A testament to this can be seen at the park in San Jacinto that bears his name “Najera Park”, dedicated to Danny and the fellow firemen fallen of Engine 57. The ‘skateboard’ bench is a tribute and reminder to our community of what a special person Danny Najera was. He will truly be missed.

Danny your will be forever in our hearts, we are so blessed to have had you in our lives, your beautiful smile, laughter and love will be missed…

Your loving family,

Ef, Mom, ‘Strawberry Shortcake Sissy’ Monica and ‘The best birthday present ever’ Michael

From a Mothers Heart:

Danny, I will forever love you baby boy and miss you every day of my life… I am so proud that you lived life to its fullest during your short life, I am very proud of the man that you became. Not one day, nor hour goes by when I yearn to get a hug, to hear you say just one more time, “I love you Mom”… my heart aches for you and until we meet in Heaven… ‘I love you forever, I like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby, you’ll be…’

See you in Heaven My Angel, My Hero, My Son… Love, Mom

Respectfully,
Gloria Najera Ayala

It’s been one year of thousands of moments, we have missed you so
The emptiness within our hearts, stays with us as we go.
The Santa Ana winds are blowing, reminding us of then,
When thoughts of saving lives meant more, from that you could not mend.

We pray the loss of life you gave, was not something made in vain
That people now protect their homes, with space away from flames
And always be the first to go, when told that danger’s coming
The painful outcome for not, is very cold and numbing

Your love within us always remains like you, we pass it on
The firefighters who mourned with us, are family never gone
Pray for the safety of each, as they give you all they got
By “Always Remembering” this, and “Thanking” them a lot

Time goes by so quick...Yes it is the dreaded October and we are under seige again! I think about Daniel, Jason, Jess, Mark, and Pablo always and their families...This last week at the "Harris Fire" when 4 of our heroes were burned trying to save a man and they were flown to the burn center in San Diego I could only cry...
I am listening to 3 of the fires now on the scanner...and my heart is sad. I came close a couple times through the years and I pray for all of our precious HEROES...
Love, Hugs and Kisses...Chief 21~Deb~

i just wanted to say that since all of the Southern California has come under siege by wild fire, I am thinking of my cousin Daniel Hoover-Najera, and all of the families who have lost loved ones to fire. I pray that there is no further loss of life. To everyone at the United States Department of Forestry and all of the fire fighters thank you for all of your hard work and all that you do for your communities. God Bless

The City of San Jacinto will honor one of it's own on March 25, 2007 - Firefighter Daniel Najera will have a new city park named after him. It is our intent to make sure that his bravery and courage will always be remembered.

At the very tender age of 20 years, he had his entire life ahead of him. Now, children will play in the park that bears his name. I have to think that just maybe he would have liked that...

Danny's commitment and dedication has been an inspiration for those who will follow in his footsteps.

Although time passes we never forget. We know your pain as we lost 6 Brothers six years ago now here in Worcester Mass., where has the time gone, children have grown, times have changed but we who were there will never and do not ever forget. May you find streagth in each other and comfort in knowing they moved forward doing such a courageous act.
